Heating System Considerations

Converting to pellet heat is easy. Each time you hear the oil boiler start or get an outrageous fuel bill, remember that Evergreen Heat can stop that painful experience. We install the pellet unit beside your existing oil/gas system and tie them in to work together. The pellet unit runs at a higher temperature and takes over the space and water heating for the building. The oil/gas unit is left on at a lower temperature and becomes the automatic back-up if you run out of pellets or go on vacation. We usually vent the pellet unit separately so that both units can run at the same time during high heat demands. The pellet unit is slightly undersized so that it has longer, hotter run cycles for peak efficiency during the spring and fall seasons.

You should have a larger building to heat because the systems are installed for between $ 7,000 and 11,000 whether in a 1,400 sq.ft. cape or a 10,000 sq.ft. warehouse. The larger building has a better payback because it uses more fuel and saves more dollars. The smaller home may be better off with just a stove. These practices satisfy the manufacturers, insurance regulations and banks, as well as state and local fire and safety codes.A licensed contractor will protect your investment with installation recommendations and procedures for your area.

Your responsibility is to keep the hopper full of pellets and check the burn pot regularly at first to remove any excess ash or deposits. As you become familiar with operation, you can check and clean out the burner every 2-6 days, depending on pellet quality. The boiler should be brushed down every 1-2 weeks for better efficiency depending on the amount of fuel used. These heating systems are best for hands-on owners that like to be involved with this type of equipment. If you travel frequently or do not have the time or interest in the small amount of work required, this system may not be a good fit for you.

I look forward to assisting you in selecting the right design and size unit for you. My 24 years of experience in heating system design and layout will be a benefit to you and the installing contractor. Some considerations before you buy:

  • Is the unit made in North America and are parts available ?
  • Does the boiler / furnace give you 80% or better efficiency ?
  • Do you have a location for the unit in basement, garage or shed ?
  • Is there a useable, lined 8″ chimney available or do you need one ?
  • Do you have a fuel source and convenient, dry area for storage ?
  •   Do you have a contractor or do you need a referral ?
